The restriction of access to social media for minors under the age of 15, as well as blocking those under 18 from browsing online betting platforms and purchasing tobacco products, is included in the plan currently being prepared by the Greek government.

According to government sources cited by “Protothema”, Greece is expected to be ready by the end of October to become the first European country to impose restrictions on the use of social networks by minors in order to protect them.

Previously, Australia had decided to ban access to social media for minors under the age of 16 (starting from October 10), as well as access to online dating platforms, in an effort to protect them from algorithmic manipulation and sexual harassment.

Now, the EU is also preparing something similar.

With European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that “France, Spain, Greece, Denmark, and Italy are testing the Commission’s plan to implement age verification on their national apps,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed the country’s participation in the program.

He stated, among other things, that “we are considering banning the use of social media from the age of 16 and below, as is being done in Australia.”
