“NAIS is a nightmare. Daniel was threatened. Now those who understand know very well to keep their mouths shut. Daniel was threatened by the Prime Minister himself to keep quiet. Let him go out and make jokes, not… he said…”

This is what former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj stated in an interview from exile in July 2024.

At the time, Ahmetaj spoke about a wiretap captured by SPAK concerning tenders worth 43 million euros (or 43 billion lek) through the National Agency for Information Society (AKSHI). On Friday, news emerged that Daniel Shima has gone missing and his family has filed a report with the police.

Daniel Shima held the position of Deputy Director at NAIS until recently, a role that placed him among the agency’s top officials, directly after director Mirlinda Karçanaj.

However, on the day his superior, Mirlinda Karçanaj, was summoned to the Special Prosecution, he was dismissed.

The head of the agency responsible for managing and improving technology and information systems in Albanian state institutions was questioned for several hours on March 19, 2024, at SPAK. Immediately after leaving, she returned to the office and signed the dismissal of Daniel Shima, who is now considered a missing person.
