A heatwave continues to sweep across large parts of Europe, as authorities in many countries have issued health warnings due to scorching temperatures.

The BBC has reported that Southern Spain is the most affected region, with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius recorded in Seville and surrounding areas.

A new June heat record of 46 degrees was set on Saturday in the city of El Granado, according to Spain’s National Meteorological Service, which also stated that this month is expected to be the hottest June ever recorded.

Heat warnings are in place across parts of Portugal, Italy, and Croatia, with multiple red alerts covering areas of Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

In Barcelona, a woman died after finishing a work shift as a street cleaner on Saturday, when temperatures were extremely high. Local authorities are investigating her death.

In Italy, emergency departments across the country have reported an increase in heatstroke cases, mainly affecting "the elderly, cancer patients, or the homeless," said Mario Guarino, vice president of the Italian Association of Emergency Medicine.

The intense heat has also affected countries throughout the Western Balkans, where temperatures have reached over 40 degrees Celsius.

Serbia recorded its highest temperature ever since it began keeping records in the 19th century.

In Slovenia, the highest June temperature on record was reached on Saturday.

North Macedonia is also experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius on Friday.
