On Sunday, October 26, 2025, Albania will officially switch to winter time. Astrophysicist Mimoza Hafizi, speaking on "Ora News," emphasized that it is time to reconsider whether changing the clocks still makes sense in today’s reality.

“In 2019, there was a discussion and a decision was made to propose to EU member states to stop changing the clocks, keeping the same time year-round. But that happened in 2019.

In 2020, COVID began, and two major changes could not overlap in people’s lives, so this decision was forgotten.

Today, every time the clocks change, the same question arises: is it still worth doing?

The practice of changing the clocks started about five decades ago, when my parents were working and now my children are working. So, nearly two generations have passed, and as we know, daily life routines and habits have changed.

I remember that back then, work started at 7 a.m., whereas today, it’s normal to start at 8 for children, or even 8:30–9.

Schedules have shifted, and given these changes in people’s daily lives, it is worth discussing whether changing the clocks is still necessary.

At the time, the idea was energy saving: by adjusting the clocks, it was reasonably calculated that the working day and the most active part of people’s lives would coincide with natural daylight, meaning more natural light and less artificial light for daily life. The part of the night when more artificial light was needed would be spent in inactivity.

Today, lifestyles have changed. Saving electricity from lamps is no longer a priority. The benefits and drawbacks of changing the clocks must be carefully weighed,” Hafizi said.
