A police inspector from Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, died in what appears to have been an attempted robbery targeting his girlfriend’s ex-husband.
The attempted theft ended fatally when he fell from a window. The Brčko District Police confirmed they had received a report of noise in an apartment in a residential building on Thursday evening.
“It was determined that an unknown person, most likely using the original key, entered the apartment without authorization and, while trying to escape the scene, sustained injuries from which he died. Near the scene, the apartment owner’s ex-wife was found in the victim’s vehicle. She is being linked to the crime,” stated Brčko police.
According to ATV, officers found the apartment door locked and had to call firefighters to break it open. Inside, they discovered the apartment ransacked, with a safe showing signs of attempted forced entry. One of the windows was open, and outside on the street lay the body of a man who had apparently tried, unsuccessfully, to escape. Police later confirmed that the deceased was in fact their colleague, an inspector.
He was in a romantic relationship with the woman found in his car. The failed burglary is believed to have been an act of revenge, as the divorce between the inspector’s girlfriend and her ex-husband had not ended well.
The man who was targeted owns a jewelry store and had reported a burglary three months earlier, also committed with the original key a case investigated at the time by the now-deceased inspector.
Police stated that an investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the prosecution to establish all circumstances surrounding this complex case.
