A group of scientists has confirmed that Venus has never had water. Venus, the second planet in the solar system, is often referred to as Earth’s “twin” due to some similarities.

According to a study by researchers from the University of Cambridge, instead of condensing on the planet’s surface, water in Venus’ atmosphere likely remained in vapor form.

The findings suggest that Venus may never have had surface oceans. Despite years of scientific debate about Venus’ history and whether it ever hosted oceans, the new research by astrochemists from Cambridge indicates that the planet has always been arid.

“Two very different scenarios about water on Venus have been proposed,” explained the report’s authors, Tereza Constantinou, Oliver Shorttle, and Paul B. Rimmer. “One suggests Venus had a mild climate for billions of years with liquid water on its surface, while the other posits an early, extremely hot Venus that never allowed liquid water to condense on its surface.”

Today, Venus is described as a “hellish world,” according to NASA. The planet’s average surface temperature reaches about 465°C, its atmospheric pressure is 90 times that of Earth at sea level, and it is perpetually shrouded in thick, toxic clouds of sulfuric acid.

In their study, scientists found that Venus’ interior lacks hydrogen, indicating it is far drier than Earth’s interior.
