A high-security inmate, Mihal Mërkuri, passed away this morning at the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” (QSUT) in Tirana. He had been serving a 10-year prison sentence for the criminal offenses of “intentional murder attempted” and “production and possession of firearms and ammunition without a license.”
Mërkuri had been admitted to the Central Intensive Care Unit, Surgery Pavilion, after undergoing surgery on January 18 around 20:21 due to internal bleeding.
According to QSUT, his death resulted from cardiac arrest and head hemorrhage.
“Sometime around 04:35, at the University Hospital Center ‘Mother Teresa’ (QSUT), high-security inmate Mihal Pavllo Mërkuri passed away. He was hospitalized in the Central ICU, Surgery Pavilion. The death occurred as a result of cardiac arrest and head hemorrhage.
Mihal Pavllo Mërkuri, born on January 25, 1979, in Sarandë, had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the crimes of ‘intentional murder attempted’ and ‘production and possession of firearms and ammunition without a license.’
He was extradited from Greece on June 20, 2023, and transferred to Burrel High-Security Prison on February 15, 2025, from Korçë Prison.
The deceased was admitted to QSUT on January 18, 2026, at around 20:21 and underwent surgery for internal bleeding (hemoperitoneum). All legally prescribed procedures are being followed in this case,” QSUT announced.
It is worth noting that yesterday evening, the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” experienced a power outage, causing chaos in the ICU. Some footage circulating online shows the disorder, including patients being moved on stretchers.
