The year 2025 will go down in history as one of the most impressive years in the history of car auctions. Prices rose sharply, records were broken early, and a 1950s Formula 1 racing icon came out on top, confirming that rarity, history, and big names continue to define absolute value.
In first place, without a doubt, was the Mercedes-Benz W196 R. The “Silver Arrow,” driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, was sold in February 2025 by RM Sotheby’s, inside the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, for €51.155 million.
It is the most expensive car to change hands at auction in 2025 and the second most expensive car of all time, surpassed only by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé.
This W196 R competed in historic Grand Prix races, with Fangio winning in Buenos Aires in 1955 and Moss setting the fastest lap at Monza before retiring due to a mechanical failure. After its racing career, the car was donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which decided to sell it to finance renovations.
After the Mercedes race car, Ferrari dominates the list. Of the top ten positions, seven are occupied by models from Maranello, confirming the timeless appeal of both classic racing cars and modern collector cars.
In second place was a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, sold in Paris for $36.345 million, while the most expensive modern car was a new and customized Daytona SP3, with a price reaching $26 million.
A 1994 McLaren F1, the ultimate supercar of the 1990s, is also on the list, having been sold for a record price for the model. Also included is a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, one of the few non-Ferrari or non-Mercedes cars in the top 10.
It is worth noting that, unlike previous years, there are no pre-war cars among the top ten best-selling vehicles. At the same time, some high-profile sales are missing, such as Ayrton Senna’s McLaren F1 MP4/6, whose price was not disclosed because it was sold at a private auction.
