Adriatik Llapaj: Just because you fail once in love doesn’t mean you won’t love again in life

Adriatik Lapaj, one of the most vocal figures in new politics and civic activism, has not yet given a definitive answer regarding a possible candidacy for the mayor of Tirana. Appearing on A2 CNN’s “Ditarin,” Lapaj left all options open, stating: “It could happen, or it might not we’ll have to see.”

Although vague, this response signals clearly that the movement “Shqipëria Bëhet” is seriously considering the challenge of competing in the capital, possibly for the first time at this level of the race.

However, the path to a successful candidacy is far from simple. A previous attempt to collaborate with “Nisma Thurje,” led by Endri Shabani, proved problematic and created public rifts between the two sides. Relations with traditional parties are also tense: with the Socialist Party, Lapaj has denounced an attempt at a “political bargain,” while with former ally Agron Shehaj, disputes ended up in court.

In this context, he has few real options for building a traditional coalition. The Democratic Party remains a theoretical option, as does the grouping expected to form around Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha. However, this would represent a significant shift for Lapaj, who has built his political profile on an anti-corruption narrative and a clear break from the old system.

He himself does not rule out the possibility of political agreements, using a fitting metaphor: “Just because you fail once in love doesn’t mean you won’t love again in life.” With this, Lapaj signals that he is not against collaborations, as long as they do not compromise his principles and vision for a different Albania.

Meanwhile, his silence on a clear candidacy could also be strategic. Local elections in Tirana are still some way off, and every political move requires time, calculation, and preparation. If Lapaj decides to enter the race, he will face a major challenge—not only against the Socialist Party’s electoral machine but also in building a credible and organized alternative in a major city like Tirana.
