Demographic trends in Albania are worsening year after year, marked by a sharp decline in the younger population and a growing number of retirees. The latest data from INSTAT for 2024 show a significant increase in citizens over the age of 60, while the total population continues to shrink.

In 2024, the 60+ age group reached 691,788 people—equivalent to 30% of the total population of 2.36 million. Just a year earlier, in 2023, this group accounted for 28.15% (673,037 people). Back in 2011, only 15% of the population was over 60.

The 65–69 age group increased by over 5,800 people in 2024 compared to 2023, while the 75–79 group grew by more than 7,300 individuals. Those aged over 85 rose from 36,840 in 2023 to 39,996 in 2024—a sign of increasing life expectancy.

In contrast, the overall population shrank by over 27,000 in just one year, from 2,390,942 to 2,363,314—a 1.2% drop. The 0–29 age group declined even more sharply, by over 30,000 people or more than 4%.

With more pensioners and fewer contributors—due to emigration and low birth rates—the financial sustainability of the pension system is in question, while the healthcare system is expected to face increasing pressure.

Experts warn that without clear policies to address aging, Albania could face irreversible consequences for its economic and social development. Recommended measures include boosting birth rates through family support, encouraging the return of young emigrants, and investing in technology and elderly care.

Albania is now in a phase of demographic transition toward an aging society. Public policies must adapt to this new reality by ensuring social protection for the elderly and building an economy capable of withstanding the transition.
