Sali Berisha appears to remain Ilir Meta’s strongest supporter, even after the opposition coalition’s election loss. Despite the weak results of the Freedom Party, Meta will have a voice in Parliament thanks to the “assistance” provided by his longtime ally, Berisha.
After previously securing four guaranteed mandates, the Democratic Party will now transfer three additional deputies to the Freedom Party to reach the minimum number of seven deputies required to form a parliamentary group.
The news was confirmed by the Secretary General of the Freedom Party, Tedi Blushi, who stated in an interview with Top Channel:
“We agreed that in case our political force did not reach the threshold of seven deputies to form a parliamentary group, we would receive three deputies from the Democratic Party. Mr. Meta’s voice will be strongly heard in the new Parliament at every session and committee meeting.”
The formation of a parliamentary group brings numerous benefits, including increased speaking time in debates, the right to offices and staff, and active participation in parliamentary structures, elements that the Freedom Party considers tools to strengthen its opposition action, even under the circumstances in which Ilir Meta will lead the party from prison.
On the other hand, Sali Berisha, still without clear leadership for the Democratic Party following the elections, has announced meetings of party forums to decide on opposition strategy.
“The only path the opposition should follow is no step back. I refer to the Battle of Stalingrad. There will be no boycott or surrender of mandates from the Freedom Party. Of course, there will be protests and strong political action,” Berisha stated.
Top Channel journalist Elda Menga reports that the same practice will also be applied with Berisha’s other allies, such as Mediu, Dule, and Duka’s deputy, ensuring that the opposition in Parliament will consist of at least three parliamentary groups, supported by deputies transferred from the Democratic Party’s lists.
