India is shaken by the murder of 25-year-old tennis player Radhika Yadav, who was shot dead by her father in their home. The chilling confession of the 49-year-old man, Deepak Yadav, is as follows:

“I shot her three times in the back while she was cooking.” One bullet got lodged in her neck, and two others hit her in the back.

Her father said he committed the crime out of humiliation: “They mocked me for being financially dependent on her.” After the crime, he was arrested by the police and confessed without resistance.

According to officers, Kuldeep Yadav, the victim’s uncle, said, “I heard a noise and went upstairs, where my brother lives. When I entered, I saw my niece Radhika lying in the kitchen bleeding and a gun in the living room. My son and I took her and drove her to Gurugram Hospital.”

However, the doctors could only declare her dead.

Although she was not a global tennis star, Radhika Yadav was a known figure in India. She had played 36 singles matches and 7 doubles matches on the ITF tour, the third tier of professional tennis below the WTA and WTA 125 tournaments.

Her most recent appearances were in March 2024 in singles and June 2023 in doubles, before a forced break due to a shoulder injury.

Despite the pause in her competitive career, Radhika had not stopped, she founded her own tennis academy and had achieved financial independence.

She was young, modern, and independent; perhaps too much so, according to her father. Tensions within the family had escalated in recent months.

According to collected testimonies, the father could not bear being sidelined or mocked.

He repeatedly demanded she close the academy, but Radhika always refused.

This refusal, for her father, was the turning point. He shot her three times while she was in the kitchen.
